The GRAND PRIZE winning entry is:

Shirley Temple Essay

**Elizabeth M. (age 16) (Ossian, Indiana)**

When I was little, I always loved to see a Shirley Temple movie. The first
one I ever saw, was Bright Eyes. It was one of my favorite movies. I always
loved it when the songs came on. I would just sit there and sing along with
her. When I watched one of her movies, the world just seemed to disappear
around me. Whatever bad thing that happend earlier was forgotten. Watching
her on the screen, made me feel a whole lot better.

I grew up in a family where I thought I just didn't belong. They were always
yelling and fighting at eachother, where as I was quiet and shy. And
watching Shirley in one of her movies, made me forget about all of that. She
always made me feel good inside. And she still does today. She could always
make me smile.

My favorite movie of hers is Curly Top. The song she sang called, "Animal
Crackers in my Soup", was the first song I learned by myself. I remember
learning it before I turned six. I would sing it to myself all of the time.
I still do sometimes, its my favorite song.

Growing up with such a big family, my voice was rarely heard. The only way
to get attention, was to do something bad. But while watching a Shirley
Temple movie, she made me want to be good like her, not bad like I thought I
had to be. She made me have a sense of belonging that I thought I had lost
so long ago.

Watching her on the screen are the best moments of my life. She has
influenced my life in so many ways. She turned me from an empty shell, to a
whole person again. She always did things so perfectly and so well, and it
always made me want to do things just the same. I don't know where I would
be without her. I hope that someday I can be and do things just like her.
Who wouldn't want to be her? She had such a wonderful career, she has a nice
family, she just has it all.

Ever since I was little, I had always wanted to learn how to tap dance. But
I didn't have the money to take lessons. So, when I was fourteen, I bought
tap shoes. And when I was home, I put my shoes on, watched Shirley dance and
then I would try to dance the same way she did. It took me a while, but I
think I have finally perfected the dances. When I finally did learn how to
dance, I was so happy, because I had wanted to learn for such a long time.
Shirley taught me how to dance. I'm not up to her level yet, but I am trying
and someday I will be at her level. Or at least I hope to be at her level of
dance.

What would the world be like without Shirley Temple? There are so many bad
things in this world and when you watch Shirley, things don't seem as bad.
She puts a smile on my face every time I watch one of her movies. She gives
me hope that things will get a lot better.

Lily

Animal crackers in my soup
Monkeys and rabbits
loop the loop
Gosh oh gee but I
have fun
Swallowing animals one by one
In every
bowl of soup I see
Lions and Tigers watching me
I make
'em jump right through a hoop
Those animal crackers in
my soup
