Hello,
I have a 16 inch, vinyl Shirley Temple doll made by Ideal. Her date is 1972 & her serial number is 2M-5634 2.
The mystery is I actually received this doll for Xmas in either 1965 or 1966! I was married & had my first child in 1972 so it is out of the question that I got the doll after 1972!
My doll was stored in my Mother's attic from 1968 to about 10 years ago when I retrievd her with the intention of passing her down to my granddaughter. That was when I discovered the odd date!
I have asked various antique doll dealers about the possiblility of the dates being printed incorrectly at the factory. No one seems to know if that is possible but I've been offered quite a few suggestions as to how the date is inconsistant with when I actually received the doll.
One suggestion is that, perhaps, someone snuck up into the attic & took my older doll & left the 1972 in it's place! Since I am the only one in our family that had a S.T doll, that isn't likely. (Besides, since the 1972 doll is somewhat valuable, why would a doll thief leave it? Also, a much more valuable Chatty Cathy doll was in the same chest & was untouched by the supposed doll thief! Another suggestion was that maybe my younger sister also had a Shirley doll & IT was mistaken for mine. That's not possible since my sister never had a Shirley Temple doll & most likely doesn't even know who Shirley Temple is! ( a different generation!) My friends & family all agree with me that I had my doll WELL before 1972!
Has anyone heard of any of these dolls being dated incorrectly? I am on a mission to find out WHY my doll bears the date & serial numbers of a doll that was manufactured years later.
Any ideas, anyone?
Thanks, Joni
